Lighton Meester (Sasha) and Gillian Jacobs (Paige) play the roles of devoted best friends in Susanna Fogal’s film, Life Partners. Sasha plays the role of a lesbian and Paige the role of her straight best friend. The two friends need to learn to deal with life changes and new relationships and how it affects their friendship and comes between them.
The film begins showing a character study of two women reaching crossroads in their lives as they face turning thirty. The film begins with the girls getting involved in a road rage confrontation, which is later revealed to be a joke they have going on for their sheer amusement. This sets the tone for the movie and lays the foundation of their strong, lengthy friendship.
Sasha and Paige are codependent friends who regularly have sleepovers and watch reality television while drinking pink wine, neither Sasha nor Paige have found a romantic relationship that that they can compare to the relationship with one another. Paige seems to be the more realistic and conventional one of the two. She has a career as an environmental lawyer, while Sasha is an aspiring singer-songwriter, who works as a receptionist in order to pay her bills and make ends meet every month.
The Friendship begins to spiral downwards when Paige begins a romantic relationship with nerdy Tim, a dermatologist who finds pleasure in reciting quotes from movie, of which Paige has never seen.
Sasha begins embarking on numerous dates, of which all seem to be disastrous. Paige does not approve of the string of women that Sasha continues to date and tries to set her up with a work colleague. Sasha gets irate when she learns of Paige’s plan to set her up. She leaves and refrains from speaking to Paige for a long period of time. Paige admits that she just wants Sasha to find a nice girl that she deserves.
After not speaking for some time, the two girls spot one another in the traffic and begin their old joke in road rage confrontation in the same way movie began. This shows the friendship reuniting and all is forgiven. Friendship is proven to overcome all obstacles.
Life Partners is a romantic comedy. We see Leighton Meester act alongside her real-life husband, Adam Brody. The story tells a tale of friends growing up and growing apart. This is not far from reality and everyone is able to relate to circumstances that have ultimately affected their friendships.
